Amazing Alpacas

We also have a small herd of alpaca and last year we had our first babies sired by Dingle, a male we bred ourselves. Alpacas are a close relative to the llama. For children they are perfect companions for a walk as they are fairly small and therefore not too strong in case they do a small ping.

We also harvest the fibre from our alpacas specifically. This is a very soft and warm fibre on a par with cashmere and we have had it knitted up into a range of designer knitwear which we stock in our shop. Details can be found on our Alpaca Knitwear page.

Alpaca Facts
Alpacas are domesticated camelids that graze on the Andes mountains in South America.
Alpaca fibre comes in more than 22 natural colours.
Alpaca fleece is lighter in weight than sheep's wool and it is silkier to the touch. It also contains no lanolin, meaning it is nearly hypo-allergenic.
The average lifespan of an alpaca is 15-20 years.
An average alpaca is 0.92m (3ft) in height at the shoulder and weighs 150lb (68kg).
The gestation period of an alpaca is 335 days and the baby is called a cria.
Alpacas have straighter ears and stubbier tails than llamas.
Alpacas are herd animals and must never be kept on their own.
